Dawn at Red Lotus Sea, Udon Thani

One of my favorite sunrise spots in Thailand is in the Red Lotus Sea at Nongharn Kumpawapi Lake, Udon Thani.

What impressed me was not the process of the rising sun, but The process of locals getting their boats ready. And minutes after, when the sunlight started to manifest itself,  our boat took off to follow a line of boats ahead of us to the heart of the so-called Red Lotus Sea.

The best time to see the blooming lotus flowers are early mornings during December to February. So during this time of the year, local fishermen have a side job to rent out their boats for tourists. They actually found the co-op so that it is systematically organized. It means that if you get to the pier, you will get the fair prices. No rip-offs.

I don’t know why they call it one of the world’s strangest lakes after all. The place is serene and very beautiful.

It is indeed. The Northeastern part of Thailand is exotic even for Thais. But as far as I know this region has a lot to offer, from ethnic cultures to splendid nature 🙂
